Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of critical reflective inquiry(CRI) on new graduate nurses¡¯ clinical decision making in an urban tertiary medical institution in Seoul.

Methods: The study was done with nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A convenience sample of 63 novice nurses was obtained. The data were collected using a self-reporting questionnaire, the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale(CDMNS), from May, 2005 to December, 2006. Experimental group(n=35) was given the CRI training which consisted of 2-hour lecture, 3-hour practice and biweekly meetings with preceptor & head nurse for 4 weeks. Afterward, experimental group was instructed to submit personal CRI report biweekly and had monthly group discussion and feedback during 3-month consecutive clinical experience. Control group(n=28) was given routine skill and field training except CRI.

Results: The CDMNS scores of the experimental group were less decreased significantly after CRI training than control group, although both were not statistically homogeneous at the pretest. Therefore, the new nurses who obtained the CRI training demonstrated better decision-making skills.

Conclusion: The CRI training would be a structured training program for the new nurses in order to improve their clinical decision making.
